Tips to Make Running More Fun!

Do you love this nice weather as much as we do? Let’s take advantage of it while we can and get moving outside! Running is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but it can get tedious! Here are some ideas to change a regular running to routine into something you will look forward to.

  • Grab a Frisbee: Head on over to a park or grassy area, throw a Frisbee (as if you had a partner), and chase after it! See how long you can go before it hits the ground. Or if you have a work out buddy, throw the Frisbee back and forth, but instead of throwing it directly to each other, throw it side to side to make your partner run!
  • Ditch technology: There are a lot of awesome mileage tracker apps and calorie counters out there, which can be great, but they also bog you down with all the stats. Every once in a while leave these gadgets at home and instead focus on your run and your surroundings!
  • Make it a race: Sprinting is a great way to torch calories, but unfortunately it’s not very exciting or motivating. Instead make it a game and chase something! For example if you see a car coming up behind you pretend you’re in a race with it, and sprint until it passes you. If you’re in a secluded area with less traffic try and race yourself with an “out-and-back” course! Time yourself running to a certain location, and on your way back try and beat that time!
  • Take a four-legged buddy: If you have a dog, take it out for a run with you! Dogs are great running partners because they are always excited to be active. Your dog’s enthusiasm can be contagious and motivate you to get outside! If you don’t own your own dog, see if you can borrow a friend's pooch for a bit, or better yet take your friend and their dog with you! Just remember that dogs are like people, and need to ease into longer distances. Start with running five miles or less with your dog, and check with your vet to see what workouts would work best for your breed.
  • Skip and hop: Add a little change to your regular running routine! If you find yourself getting bored with just running, add some fun plyometric moves such as skipping and hopping to switch it up! This can be a fun and easy way to burn calories.
