The Benefits of Running

, by Anne Audain

“Coffee doesn’t do it for me; it’s RUNNING that gets me going.” - Joan Benoit Samuelson 1984 Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist

Recently our family doctor retired and my husband and I had to meet our new doctor. We met him independently, but we both had the same experience. We are in our late 50’s and try to run daily. We went through all the general health questions but when we answered that neither of us are on any medications and never have been except for occasional antibiotic remedies, he showed surprise.

Then we said we ran. His comment was “That explains it. All my runner patients are in good health!”

This was a recent post on the Runners World Facebook page, on the "Nine Surprising Ways Running Helps Your Body"

My husband has been running with the same group of friends, male and female for over 30 years! They are now in their late 50’s early 60’s. Some don’t run daily anymore and do some cross-training, but they all still meet at the same spot at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning to run together and have coffee afterwards.

They are all in good health. The women are flying through menopause with very minimal side effects. However none of us are naive enough to think we won’t have a health challenge at some point as we age. The goal is to have as many good days as possible for as long as we can, and when the challenge comes we can put up a good fight!

Running is not just a great weight maintenance tool. It strongly enhances our daily quality of life!

GO RUN!
