Move for Fun, Get Fit for Life: Health and Fitness are Your Most Rewarding Daily Habit

As director of FitOne, I hear stories of life-changing, awe-inspiring transformation nearly every day. I look forward to hearing these stories just as much as I do our fantastic event.

What’s most exciting? That those stories can be yours. These transformations happen in the lives of normal folks like you and me. I know; I hear it from dozens of our participants.

Stories of weight lost. Fitness gained. Friends made.

The FitOne fun is getting under way again, and summer is the perfect time to inventory your health and fitness and put a goal or two on the calendar so you can start your own success story.

Set A Goal. Whether you are looking to eat healthier, move more or maybe both, setting specific goals is a great first step. It might be to add one or two servings of fruits and vegetables to your daily diet, or to walk for 20 to 30 minutes after dinner instead of watching television. Simple changes like these add up over time if we hold ourselves accountable.

Have you ever taken part in a 5K? Are you ready to try a 10K or half marathon? On Saturday, Sept. 24, FitOne will host a fun, family-friendly run/walk in the heart of Boise, and kids 12 and under are free with a paid adult. This could be one of those goals you put on your calendar now and that you track your progress toward until event time. Crossing that finish line provides a great sense of accomplishment and will likely inspire you to keep going!

Team Up with Friends and Family. Oftentimes, it is the accountability factor that makes all the difference when it comes to sticking to our goals. If we know someone is waiting for us to join them for a walk or a training run, we are a lot less likely to find an excuse not to show up.

This is where each and every one of us can be a role model in our own way, and one opportunity to do so is by becoming a team captain at FitOne. Create a fun team name and invite your friends and family members to join you at FitOne in September.

Schedule regular meeting times to train together over the summer, and encourage each other along the way. Team members can participate in any of the three distances, and you can all celebrate together at the FitOne Finish Festival on race day! And when you go to packet pick-up at the two-day FitOne Healthy Living Expo Sept. 22-23, you can enjoy the fun activities, shopping, cooking demonstrations, fitness classes, opportunities to win prizes and more.

Inspire a Healthy Workplace. Between the ever-present treats in the break room and the hours spent sitting at a desk, being healthy at work can seem like an uphill battle. Here’s where you can take the initiative to inspire healthier habits in your workplace.

In partnership with SelectHealth, FitOne encourages businesses to team up for health, fitness and camaraderie, and provides content to share with your co-workers on how to create a healthier workplace. Ask your employer to consider partial or full reimbursement for employee FitOne entry fees if you volunteered as a team captain for the FitOne Healthy Business Challenge. Many businesses provide wellness incentives like this, and FitOne can work with your company to coordinate billing. A team recruitment toolkit is available online to help you build your team as well.

St. Luke’s and FitOne are hosting a special 24-hour event at The Village at Meridian, where you can register for the family-friendly FitOne 5K, 10K and Half Marathon in September as part of a bigger “Fit for Summer Package.” The registration package is also available online at
