Finding Your Life Balance

, by Kristin Armstrong

Whether it be the 5K, 10K or half-marathon, many have already made the commitment to participate in FitOne on September 20th – and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? Join the fun and sign up today!

So now what? How do I get started, stay on track and accomplish my big goal – to FINISH, to IMPROVE, to START living a healthy lifestyle?

Becoming a mom 4 years ago, training for my 3rd Olympic Games, family and work…I get asked quite often “How do you balance everything you do?” It was like I had a hidden secret to my success. I have news for you – it’s not easy. I look at BALANCE as a key contributor to success towards any dream or goal one may have.  Too much of anything is not healthy.

In today’s society there are so many opportunities as well as distractions happening all around us; sometimes it's just hard to say “no” until you become so overwhelmed that you become what I refer to as “frozen." You are waking up early, getting your kids off to school, going to work, picking the kids up only to feed them as quickly as possible get them off to their next practice. You lie in bed at night thinking of all the things you didn’t accomplish and begin to create your “to do list” for the next day just so you can sleep through the night.

Does this sound familiar?

My advice to everyone feeling this way, including myself at times is to remove the “clutter” from your daily life. Prioritize what it is that is important and take away those things that aren’t on the top of the list. Hint – you can’t keep your entire list smile A few things I removed off the top of my list were social outings, dinner with friends, number of appearances and volunteer time. Everyone's life balance will be unique, and it's important to find YOURS.

For me, I tell myself that if it weren’t for my health, then everything that is on the top of my list – family, job, not sustainable. You have to block out time on your calendar each and every day to be active. This goes for at-home moms, teachers, CEO’s – everyone! You would never consider missing a dentist, hair or pedicure appointment would you? Treat activity the same, put it on your calendar, create goals and go after them! I also plan out when I am going to grocery shop so that I am not making a quick detour after work to pick up some pizza – EASY. Eating healthy and being active go hand-in-hand in my eyes. You have to fuel your body for it to perform optimally. Be good to yourself, take care of yourself so that you can enjoy a long happy life with your family and go after the dreams you have set for the future.

Get started, dream big and go after what ever it is you want – BELIEVE!
