Dive In Head First!

, by Weight Loss Challenge

About three weeks ago I took it upon myself to try something new when it came to my exercise routine. I have been starting to get bored with my usual cardio and weight lifting regime. It made me not want to go to the gym or get in an extra hour of activity everyday. So I decided to change it up and try out swimming!

I have been an athlete all my life, and continuing into college I think my knees and ankles are just about done for! Swimming takes your body weight out of the equation and allows you to be active without putting stress on your joints. This exercise is great for anyone struggling with chronic joint pain. The buoyancy of the water supports a portion of your weight, reducing the load on your joints as you move. Along with protecting your joints, swimming has many other benefits. Swimming is a full-body workout. You are using just about every muscle in your body to keep yourself afloat while paddling across the pool giving you a great workout! It has been surprising to me how much swimming raises my heart rate. While swimming I am building endurance, gaining strength, and toning my muscles. I always leave the pool feeling energized and ready for the rest of my day.

There are many different strokes to try to keep things interesting. Ask any lifeguard for help or check out classes your gym has to offer that involve swimming. Water aerobics may be one of them. This group fitness activity takes place in a should-deep water level and involves aerobic exercises, calisthenics, and light resistance training. Check out this article for more information on benefits of water aerobics.

One of the greatest benefits of swimming is it is a life-long sport – Meaning no matter what age you are, it is never too late to dive in head first!

One of the great perks of being a part of the St. Luke’s $10,000 Weight Loss Challenge is there are so many great resources available to you that can help you with your weight loss.  Don’t be afraid to take advantage and email us with any questions at weightlosschallenge@slhs.org.
